SPH Engineering MagNIMBUS Atomic Total-field Magnetometer

The MagNIMBUS is an ultra-sensitive UAV-mounted magnetometer system built around QuSpin QTFM Gen-2 atomic total-field sensors, engineered for high-resolution magnetic anomaly detection in applications such as UXO search, buried infrastructure locating, mineral exploration, archaeology, and environmental surveys. The system is designed for very low surface-to-sensor clearance, starting from just a few tens of centimetres, and features a foldable, crash-tolerant mount. This means the sensor can safely touch ground, rocks, or vegetation without risking drone stability, an essential capability when detecting small metallic targets in overgrown or uneven terrain.

MagNIMBUS is fully integrated for DJI Matrice M350/M300 RTK, and includes a SkyHub onboard computer which handles data logging and terrain-following autopilot, enabling stable flights at ultra-low altitudes. The system is available in two configurations: a single-sensor setup for lightweight and rapid deployment, and a vertical gradiometer configuration using two stacked QTFM sensors for improved anomaly clarity, reduced ambient noise, and operation near powerline EMI without a magnetic base station.

The single-sensor unit weighs approximately 570 g, with a compact foldable design (640 × 180 × 75 mm folded / 1100 × 310 × 75 mm unfolded). The mounting hardware for M350/M300 adds only ~100 g. A rugged transport case (846 × 427 × 167 mm, ~6.9 kg) is included for field deployment. The system is typically operated using UgCS Expert for autonomous mission planning and Geosoft Oasis montaj for post-processing
