The A2 Certificate of Competency is the UK qualification that lets you fly a drone nearer to uninvolved people than the basic Open category rules allow. On a class marked UK2 or C2 drone under 4 kg, that's down to 30 metres, or 5 metres in low speed mode. On a legacy drone under 2 kg, it's 50 metres, and the 150 metre rule on built-up areas no longer applies. It never permits flying over uninvolved people.
This course is delivered online by Blue Skies Drone Training, a CAA approved Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE15601). You learn through short videos at your own pace, practise with mock exams, then sit the final exam at home on a laptop or desktop with a webcam. It's the usual next step once you hold your Flyer ID, and your certificate is valid in the UK for five years.
